DAY #2 AT THE RECOVERY SPOT

mai 13th, 2009

The second day at the recovery spot was sunny and  relaxing a contrast to the mayhem that is sure to follow! As well as nice change from the current rain in Paris.
Yoga classes start tomorrow Friday at 4pm sharp so bring your anti Cannes style  sweat pants and come for an ocean front session of relaxation and loveliness to escape the madness of la croisette!
The Colette beauty spot was a big hit with the gals who fell in love with USLU’s multicoloured nail varnishes and were too impatient to let Marc Emmanuel do their nails.
Who could blame them nothing like a rainbow range of colors to make a girl smile.

La plage vitaminwater, “the recovery spot”
FIF, Cannes 2009.

After a lovely time in Paris the vitaminwater POPUP BAR has sought out sunnier horizons and has landed on the beach in Cannes, just in time for the Cannes International Film Festival. By day the vitaminwater beach will become The recovery spot. Situated on the croisette the recovery spot will offer festival goers a healthy alternative to the champagne fuelled nights and teams will be onhand every day to help tired party people hydrate, recover and relax. Yoga classes from Friday 15th to Friday 22nd, everyday at 4pm will keep the cinemaphiles shakras aligned. The team from Precious will be joining us for lunch at the restaurant which will be offering a fresh menu of modern French cuisine.

For our more active, fitter friends Reebok will be doing a one day learn to fly lesson with Cirque du Soleil. For the aquatic types Quiksilver will be providing a new and innovative standing paddle board for those who want to get away from it all… literally.
Our lovely friends from Colette, Paris, will be joining us on this adventure also setting up a beauty spot providing the glamour and treating guests to complimentary beauty treatments, manicures and makeup.
At night the beach will play host to private film parties such as Ken Loaches “ Looking for Eric” , “Ne te retourne pas” starring the beautiful Monica Belluci and “THIRST” which we will happily quench.

Come and build some sandcastles with La Clique or play pétanque with us or maybe just lie in a hamock and soak in some colour therapy! Check this blog for daily updates.

NEW YORK Vs LOS ANGELES

avril 22nd, 2009

East Vs West… Popup broadcast session presented 2 amazing documentaries about subculture in America. Captured, which premiered at New York’s New Museum’s Theater, grasps the eclectic micro-society of ever-changing downtown community known as Lower East Side. Since 1979, director Clayton Patterson has dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City’s Lower East Side, a neighbourhood famed for art, music and revolutionary minds.
On the other side, Stacy Peralta, the director behind Dogtown and Z-Boys, made a powerful attempt to document the infamous South Los Angeles rivalry between the Crips and Bloods. Made in America, narrated by Forest Whitaker, examines the conditions that have lead to decades of devastating gang violence among young African Americans growing up in South Los Angeles.

CHATEAU MARMONT LIVE!

avril 18th, 2009

Not only Château Marmont is the hypest hotel in West Hollywood, it also happens to be one of the most promising French band right now.  This four pieces combo just signed on Parisian label Institubes to release their dreamy atmospheric musical productions. Based upon vintage analogue synths and other lo-fi gear, they manage to blend exquisitely the warm and organic side of their instruments with the coldness of their machines. The result could be seen as cosmic pop or hippy electro; whatever you call it, it’s clearly the trendiest ride of tomorrow. Popup passengers were clearly hypnotized by this space journey.

FASHION & OSCARS

avril 17th, 2009

As former Features Editor of British Vogue, Bronwyn Cosgrave knows what she’s talking about…  After researching during 3 years on the subject, she published Made For Each Other, a fascinating study about the intricate relations between fashion and the Academy Awards. Far from being a simple matter of accessory, the choice of the nominated actress’ dress comes rather under the category of politics, conflict of interest, manipulation, power quest, big money and other political skulduggery. With her numerous anecdotes, Bronwyn captured both some of the truly awful appearances, as well as those moments of an exquisite matching between a designer and a star.

DANDY SPEED DATING

avril 16th, 2009

David Piper & Wade Crescent landed in Paris with their New English Dandy associates to organize an extraordinaire Dandy Speed Dating session. Master of ceremony Wade sklifully led the panel discussions with his famous sense of irony… so British ! Dandy outfits were provided by our friends at Wochdom so everyone could feel like they were parts of some Dorian Grey novel. If the idea of English people arriving in Paris to give flirting lessons might seem a bit unexpected… it’s just because you haven’t seen their timeless elegance invading the Popup Bar.

LE MANIFESTE MUSIC VIDEOS

avril 15th, 2009

Music videos are not what they used to be in the early MTV days… It’s not unusual now to witness talented movies directors turning into brilliant music film-makers (…the other way also being true). Graphic designer and illustrator Stéphane Manel also chose to display his work on this media with two brilliant animated music videos: Pacific – Hot Lips and second degree Canadian vocoder masters Chromeo – Momma’s Boy. On the poetic side, we had Sebastien Tellier – Roche directed by Tellier’s favourite Fleur & Manu, and, last but not least, the aesthetic Air - La Femme d’Argent by Guillaume Delaperriere.

AN PIERLE & THE WHITE VELVET LIVE!

avril 11th, 2009

Seated on an oversized beach balloon, An Pierlé, alongside her White Velvet partner Koen Gisen on guitar, gave us some kind of recital we’re not about to forget ! Such an intimate feeling rose of this one…  The pair’s eclectic tastes allow for simplicity, piano-driven melodies and beautifully arranged songs. People said An was huge in Belgium… Now me might say she’s also huge in Paris !…The rest of the world should follow promptly.

15 MINUTES OF FAME WITH NOAM GONICK

avril 10th, 2009

On top of his impressive records of institutional achievements and numerous selected films (Sundance, Venise, Berlin, Toronto), Noam Gonick is also and above all an enthusiast freak/character who’s all about the social experience behind his movies. Popup was then a perfect experimental field for his real-life laboratory. With his very own magnetism, he managed to turn the crowd into a bunch of fearless actors improvising about whatever was on their mind at that time (with special mention to Pain O Chocolat member Medhi with his impressive pimp monologue!)… Noam turned the Popup Bar into a lo-fi parisian Actor Studio.
